So lately I’ve been getting a lot of mail. But, not from people saying anything. So far, since the site has reopened, I’ve gotten one hate mail and one fan mail (you probably know who you are if you are reading this. Thanks for both, though it’s not the reason I started it, I’m grateful that my “work” (and I use that term lightly) touches people some way or another, especially if it’s going to piss someone off. Yay!
But, the majority of mail I’ve gotten lately is poorly hidden virus’. Anything with someone else’s name or a subject line of “Re: confirmation”, ”Mail Delivery Failure”, and other shit like that fall gets erased. Good rule of thumb for people on a PC such as me: don’t open any attachments or click “OK” on pop-ups if you don’t know who sent it.
Now, saying that, beware of any oddly typed messages from sources you KNOW. Recently, I got an email from the author “Hawk”. Now, I’m not going to say I know Hawk of Applegeeks, but he does moderate on some forums that I populate. The subject: A game you’d like.
”OK,” I think to myself, “He might of found something and thought from my posts that I’d like it.” Now, I ALMOST fell for it except for the fact that in the email it said “>>>Virus Not Found.” Right. No normal person writes shit like that. It should be implied that there's no virus, dumbass. In any case, I deleted that sucker. I also got one that was from ME! That’s right, “evilcanofjoy” was the author of the message. Not the email source (which was predictably a random address), but the person sending this shit can’t be that stupid if they’d made some sort of worm or Trojan. Which is what people are getting from emails like this.
I write this rant for two purposes. First, that people should know to erase this shit before they open it. Most people should be smart enough not to fall for these emails that promise sex sites or are from “friends.” Second, the use of people that I have at least a second hand knowledge of and could theoretically know my email address to send me something leads me to believe that I may be targeted for these emails trying to trick me into downloading a virus. Maybe they are just asses or maybe they don’t like what I say about things on my site. Regardless, I’m not that stupid and what gets passed my email filters doesn’t get past my brain.
The overall point? People that do this are assholes that have nothing else to do with their time when they aren’t coding bad Comp Science projects or begging money from mommy to get the new Unreal game and throw LAN parties in their parent’s basement (which they consequently rent because no landlord would want their dumb nerd ass in their rooms).
