USA - Maine

Castine

In his amusing American travelogue, 'The Lost Continent', Bill Bryson describes how he drove up the coast looking for the charm of rural New England: 'I drove and drove, thinking that any moment now I would encounter the fabled Maine of lobster pots and surf-battered shores and lonely lighthouses standing on rocks of granite, but the towns I passed through were just messy and drear...'

At Wiscasset, Bill Bryson stopped looking for Maine and headed back towards New Hampshire. If he'd only continued up the coast he might have made it to the Penobscot peninsula and pretty little Castine. Here he might have enjoyed the picture postcard town, the seashore, the historic sites. And he might have stayed at the Castine Inn.

This pleasant hotel has a very good restaurant and a cosy pub. It's right in the middle of Castine - you can stroll down to the waterfront in minutes. Among other attractions, Castine itself has a picturesque town square - portrayed in part of a mural on the walls of the restaurant at the Castine Inn.

Brookline

Convenient for visitors to Boston who don't mind using the MBTA's excellent subway a light rail system which runs above ground at St Paul Street station near the hotel but dives underground on the way into Boston, the Bertram Inn is a quiet Victorian house in a quiet neighbourhood not too far out.
