Dream Symbols

Interpreting dreams is actually a very personal issue - what means one thing to one person may mean something entirely different to another person. We are also affected by what has happened in our lives the day before the dream. I cannot begin to count the "strange" things that have come into my dreams that can be directly connected to a movie that I have seen, or a book that I have read.

We also want to remember that dream sequences are just that - sequences. The dream is a story made up of many small parts, all inter-relating. No one symbol stands alone - they must be interpreted in relation to each other.

What I list below are symbols that are fairly common in dreams, and their general meaning. I have also listed some of the meanings for numbers and colors. Numbers can occurin our dreams in many ways - as street numbers, house numbers, numbers on doors (i.e. inside buildings, such as schools or places of business) and numbers on license plates. Jot down your feeling about the numbers that you see, and how often they occur from dream to dream. Colors are important, as they relate to our chakra system and the areas that each chakra is "responsible" for. Also, a clear color generally indicates a clear flow of energy, where a muddy color indicates blocked energy, or even doubt or confusion on the part of the dreamer.

Numbers:

1. The number one can indicate new beginnings - it is inspiration, it concerns things that are about to happen. This is about determination and independence. The dark side of the number one is that it can refer to selfishness and force.

2. The number two refers to balance, of sharing and communicating. This is the number envisioning that which we wish to bring about. The dark side of the number two is lack of tolerance/patience.

3. The number three is the number of expression, especially through words. The dark side of the number three is scattered energies and blocked communications. Another keyword for the number three is commitment.

4. The number four holds the energy of manifestation, of bringing about on the physical plane what one has been able to see ino nes mind. Thisis a number of plannig and building. The dark side of the number four refers to limitations and blocks, and to getting caught up in the process.

5. The number five expansion and the desire to know. It is the bringing together of the mundane and the spiritual. The dark side of the number five is that of bringing about failure through one's own fears.

6. The number six is the number of adjustment, of turning inward to bring balance and harmony into one's life. The dark side of the number six is discord.

7. The number seven holds the message of faith and belief. It is about the spiritual in our lvies. The dark side of the number seven is in the realm of our doubts and fears, and holding onto a pessimistic attitude.

8. The number eight is the number of power and accomplishment. The dark side to the number eight is the abuse of power.

9. The number nine is all about completing one cycle and going on to the next. It is about personal fulfillment. The dark side of the number nine is a deep sense of loss.

10. The number ten is about completion - one cycle has been completed, and another is about to begin. The number ten also holds within it the energy of the number one, and new beginnings. The dark side of the number ten is an unwillingness to leave one cycle for another.

Colors:

White: White carries the thought of spiritual protection and of Spirit. It can purify other colors (i.e. make them less muddy). This can also indicate the gift of prophecy - of being able to bring through messages from the divine to the physical world.

Black: Black usually indicates some type of fear, or it can indicate the unknown. Black muddies other colors and brings in a touch of negativity, of a blocked flow of energy. Red: Red is the color associated with our base chakra, and indicates passion and sexuality. Orange: Orange is the color of the sacral chakra. As a color associated with drive and ambition, it is an energyzing color.

Yellow: Yellow is connected with the solar plexus chakra, and with intellect.

Green: Green is the color of the heart chakra. It is about balance and sharing. Green in a dream can indicate that the dreamer has counselling skills. Pink: Pink is the color of unconditional love.

Blue: Blue is associated with the throat chakra, and with religion and philosophy. Blue is often seen as the color of healers/healing.

Purple: Purple is associated with the crown chakra. It is the color of a spiritual leader/teacher/master.

Gray: Gray is associated with the inability to make decisions, and with denying ones emotions.

Brown: Brown is the color of earth, and of practicality.

Silver: Silver is the color of intuition.

Symbols: Animals: Animals can represent people in our lives, or the "survival" instinct in ourselves. Being chased by an animal may indicate that the dreamer is repressing something in their life. Ant: This can refer to working hard, laying down a foundation for the future.

Antiques: This can refer to our memories, or to outmoded ideas.

Apples: This can refer to temptations in the dreamers life.

Armies: This can refer to physical strength, help coming to us, protection.

Arrows: This can refer to judgment and/or gossip.

Autumn: This refers to completion.

Baby: This can refer to something new - a new beginning, or to the vulnerability of the dreamer.

Back: experiences that are behind you.

Clothes: This can refer to either how the dreamer sees him/her self, or to how he feels others view him/her. Old, worn or torn cloths may indicate the need for changing ones way of thinking, while changing cloths may indicate a change int he lifestyleof the dreamer.

Cross: This may represent burdens the dreamer is carrying, or may indicate that the dreamer is at a crossroads in their life.

Death: This most often represents something coming to an end int he dreamers life. One thing is being released to make room for another thing to come in.

Falling: The dreamer may fear being out of control in their waking life, or they may be holding on to fears of letting someone or something go.

Food: Food is wisdom coming the way of the dreamer in some form.

Devil: This can refer to emotions that are being held back that need to be expressed. It may also indicate a need for the dreamer to take a good look at their own behavior, and bring balance to the spiritual and the mundane in their life.

House: (I personally have seen this dream symbol very often.) A house represenets the self of the dreamer. The rooms represents the emotions and attitudes of the dreamer. The higher floors can indicate conscious thinking, the basement or lower floors unconscious thinking.

Marriage: This is often not a "literal" marriage between two people. It can indicate a coming together of the feminine and masculine aspects of the dreamer - or the gateway between the conscious and unconscious selves.

Money: This may represent the self worth of the dreamer, and can also represent their life values.

Naked/Nudity: One way of interpreting this is that the dreamer feels open/exposed to the world.

People: The people in ones dreams can often represent different parts of ones self. Take note of how the people in your dreams are acting, and ask yourself what part of you this represents. Roads: Roads can represent the patterns in the dreamers life, and/or the path/direction in life that they are taking.

School: This can represent the experiences that the dreamer is going through or has gone through. If this is a repetitive symbol, ask yourself if you have been learning your lessons!

Sex: This may represent a true sexual feeling, or it may indicate a coming together of parts of ones self that have been repressed.

2 Teacher: This symbol holds a spiritual connotation - often representing the Higher Self.

Vehicles: This is often a symbol of the self. Who is doing the driving? Who has control? Water: This represents the unconscious aspect of the mind. Water is also a tool for cleansing - physical, emotional and spiritual cleansing.
