Dreamtime - How We Dream

Dreamtime - How We Dream

Dreams reflect how we are assimilating our daytime lives - how we are able to process what is going on in our waking hours. If you are like me, there will be a certain amount of stress in your life these next two months as the holidays approach. For me, this also means "remembering" more of my dreams.

Dreams can come to us in many ways. If we are dealing with one certain issue in our lives, and need to bring it to resolution, we may find ourselves having dreams that are like a continuing soap opera. Each dream builds on the previous dream, with the same cast of characters and the same environment. These are dreams that are fairly easy to work with. We may recognize exactly what they mean, and take the actions in our waking lives that will right this issue in our lives. If there is something that doesn't make sense, know that you can go to sleep t he next night carrying the thought that you want to be given "more information" about the previous nights dream. Our "dream maker", or higher conscience, will then present the dream in a way that we do understand it.

Another scenario is that the same dream presents itself over and over again. This type of dream, in my personal experience, has usually been what is called a symbolic dream, in that the people and the environment stand for things other than what the actually are in my waking life. These dreams are messages from the spirit world. They are being repeated for a reason - we need to clarify them so that we can place the wisdom in our daily lives and grow as individuals.

We sometimes dream what are termed "precognitive" dreams - dreams that portray events that manifest themselves in the future. Usually we are being given these dream so that some type of understanding comes to us (not, as some people feel, so that we can intervene and stop the event from happening). This is where a dream journal comes in handy - so that we have a chance to look back, see what we dreamed and what our reaction to the dream at that time was. In this way, we begin to understand the power of dreams, and what part they play in our individual lives.

Sometimes you may realize that you are dreaming at the same time that the dream is taking place. These are called lucid dreams. They may come to us unbidden - or we can work to place them in our lives. The reason that these dreams are important is that we have the ability to change the outcome of the dream as we are dreaming. This is a very strong type of healing.

An interesting type of dream is when you have the same dream, at the same time, that another person has. This happens when the two of you are either sleeping in close proximity, or when there are close personal bonds between you.

Sometimes, when we are going through intense periods of personal growth, we have what are termed universal dreams. This is information that comes to us from the collective unconscious, our brief "peek" at the akashic records. These are generally spiritual dreams by nature, and leave us with a sense of peace (for me, they do, anyway!). They can also be indicative of things coming to us in the near future.

Many things act as catalysts for our dreams. A life situation that resembles a past life situation may open up old wounds. What we eat, the weather around us - this all plays a factor in what and how we dream.

It is most important to make notes in your dream journal immediately upon waking from a dream - even if that is in the middle of the night. The reason for this is that our awareness of the dream world fades rapidly when we awaken.

Remember that dreamtime is meant to act as a balance in our lives - as a time when information can come through to us freely, without going through the filter of the mind. We can find closure about issues in our life through dreamtime - all we need to do is go into dreamtime with the intent of coming to an understanding about our issues. In dreamtime we have the help of our higher conscious and many other energy forms to bring about the best decisions in our lives. It is a tool of empowerment that knows no bounds.
