Dr. Koopman makes a very important point here - that Dr. Burke emphasizes basing your goals on your core belief system, so that the house that you build will be one with a firm foundation that will withstand the test of time. We can enrich our lives and heal ourselves faster when our actions are in alignment with our beliefs. We also have to learn to recognize which of our beliefs are holding us back, and replace them with beliefs that are in greater alignment with who we really are, and where we want to be in life. Our positive beliefs allow us to truly embrace our dreams, and make them come true. When we are able to heal our beliefs, we are able to begin healing ourselves.

Dr. Burke goes on to say that in healing our beliefs, we may be working on something that has deep seated roots in our past. This is not a comfort zone for anyone - and is one reason why we hold on to those beliefs, and sometimes allow them to rule our lives. How we come to transform our beliefs is a learning process in itself. The method, or path, that we choose to use in transforming our beliefs needs to be one that is in accordance with our goals - one that will allow us to achieve our goals. We need to recognize that some of our beliefs are hidden beliefs - ones that we do not consciously recognize. Bringing them out into the light of day will be a slow and painful process.

Self-hypnosis is one of the best vehicles for achieving lasting transformation, as it encourages us to clarify our goals, quiets our inner resistance, focuses our intention and makes learning an almost effortless activity. Dr. Burke does an excellent job of describing brain wave activity, and the different levels of sleep. He also makes the point that hypnosis is not what most of us think it is - it is not a trip straight to our unconscious selves.

There is a method given here - called the "one-minute method", which is based on the following formula:

  • Induce and deepen a quietly focused mind-body learning state.

  • Send transformative suggestions to the deep mind-body state.

  • Come back refreshed and ready for life at a new level.
  • Visualizing an energy ball that is held in your hand, you quickly access your deeper self, and are able to leave positive suggestions for given situations (or for any area of your life that you want to transform). I have tried this exercise, with marvelous results! What a wonderful tool to have to use just before going into an interview, an important meeting, or dealing with any situation that is stressful. You will see immediate results when using this technique.

    Dr. Burke emphasizes the importance of developing the right attitude before doing this work. The old adage "Garbage In, Garbage Out" comes to mind here. The results that you get from your work will depend to a large extent on your preparedness, your ability to focus and on your intent. The elements included in this process, and expanded upon in separate chapters, are:

    1. Visioning - select goals and prepare for the session (Chapter 6)
    2. Focusing - induce the hypnotic state of consciousness (Chapter 7)
    3. Transforming - give self-transformational suggestions (Chapter 8)
    4. Concluding - complete the process and return to activity (Chapter 9)

    Each chapter includes simple exercises that help place the intent of that chapter in your life. You focus on a particular objective, and see how to best implement it in your own work. One of the things that most impressed me here were the admonitions that were woven throughout the book to not try and deal with issues that would bring us fear, or that were rooted in issues that were best dealt with in conjunction with a professional. Energy work, such as self-hypnosis, is a powerful tool for transformation and change. As such, it sometimes touches areas of great pain and concern, areas that as individuals we have built walls around, or avoided completely. We can do ourselves more harm than good by trying to do this type of work on our own.

    Dr. Burke throughout this book encourages his readers to recognize that self-hypnosis can be used in many different areas of our lives - in fact, in any area that we choose to apply it to. At the end of the book, he presents templates for the entire self-hypnotic process as applied in several different areas, to include addiction, anxiety, career, energy, health and healing, learning, pain, self-confidence and weight management.

    There is a great deal of information covered here, and covered in a very down to earth, usable manner. This is a book to be used, not just read. Take Dr. Burke's suggestion and fine tune the process to fit you as an individual. You will experience transformation in your life - at any level that you want it to be. This is a book that can be easily used by people of all ages, and from all backgrounds.
