The Mayan Calendar
and the
Transformation of Consciousness

Foreword by José Argüelles

I don't know what I expected from this book - but it turned out to offer some stunning insights into calendar's, time, and the cycles and flow of human existence. The subject is the Mayan Calendar - a calendar that follows a spiritual timeline, rather than the astrologically based Gregorian calendar's that we are used to.

It functions as a metaphysical map of the evolution of human consciousness, recording the spiritual flow of time in a scientific manner. The Mayan Calendar is based on nine creation cycles, each of which represents one of nine levels of consciousness (also termed Underworlds) on the Mayan cosmic pyramid, and thirteen Heavens.

The nine Underworlds are:

  • First Underworld: Cellular Connected with the evolution of cellular consciousness.

  • Second Underworld: Mammalian Connected with the evolution of mammalian consciousness.

  • Third Underworld: Familial Connected with the evolution of anthropoid consciousness

  • Fourth Underworld: Tribal Connected with the evolution of hominid consciousness.

  • Fifth Underworld: Regional Connected with the evolution of human consciousness.

  • Sixth Underworld: National Connected with the evolution of civilized consciousness.

  • Seventh Underworld: Planetary Connected with the evolution of global consciousness.

  • Eighth Underworld: Galactic Connected with the evolution of galactic consciousness.

  • Ninth Underworld: Universal Connected with the evolution of cosmic consciousness.
  • The thirteen Heavens are:

  • Heaven 1: Sowing (3115-2721 BCE)

  • Heaven 2: (2721-2326 BCE)

  • Heaven 3: Germination (2626-1932 BCE)

  • Heaven 4: (1932-1538 BCE)

  • Heaven 5: Sprouting (1538-1144 BCE)

  • Heaven 6: (1144-749 BCE)

  • Heaven 7: Proliferation (749-355 BCE)

  • Heaven 8: (355 BCE-40 CE)

  • Heaven 9: Budding (40-434 CE)

  • Heaven 10: (434-829 CE)

  • Heaven 11: Flowering (829-1233 CE)

  • Heaven 12: (1223-1617 CE)

  • Heaven 13: Fruition (1617-2011 CE)
  • Interesting note on Heaven 13 - it is the last Heaven listed ... there are no more. This does not necessarily indicate an apocalyptic scenario, however. It could indicate a permanent rise in the consciousness of humanity, after which a spiritual calendar would not be necessary. The ultimate endpoint for human consciousness would have been reached.

I think that we are all aware that this is going to happen, at least according to the Mayan Calendar, in our lifetime. The whole concept of this calendar suddenly becomes very, very relevant to where we are headed as individuals, nations, continents etc. We are all inter-related, and we are all following the same timeline.

The Mayan Calendar follows a 360, rather than a 365 day year. It works within a cycle of twenty days, rather that the 30/31 days that we are used to, and has no need for the concept of leap year.

Dr. Calleman uses this system to extrapolate some very interesting data on such things as world religions (and their common origin); on world wars, and the personages involved in them; and on how we can use the Mayan Calendar to make perfect sense of history as we know it - that it does follow a timeline, and is not a series of random events.

He also talks about the feeling that we all have of time moving faster. It isn't just about me aging, thank heavens! As we moved from the materialism of the Planetary Underworld (1755-1999) into the higher frequency of the Galactic underworld (1999-2011), we began towards a more intuitive, telepathic type of lifestyle, and away from the technological age.

All of this is in preparation for the ninth Underworld, the Universal Underworld, which starts in February of 2011. This is the Underworld of Enlightenment - of spiritual evolvement attained.

What we as individuals need to do is to align ourselves with this cosmic pattern of growth - to acknowledge that it is there, to not fear it. At the end of the book Dr. Calleman lists some excellent resources, including his personal Internet site (www.calleman.com). I have to warn you - the site is in Swedish, and I saw no way to translate it into English. The Yahoo Groups e-group that is listed I was unable to locate - but there are several e-groups on Yahoo Groups that do deal with the Mayan Calendar.

The site referred to for the Oneness Celebration (celebrating the Venus transits of June 6th, 2004 and June 6th, 2012) is still up. The address is www.OnenessCelebration.com.

There is also an excellent glossary that is a tremendous help when trying to digest the material in this book - especially if you are new to this subject, as I am.

For those who want to take another look at timelines, at human history, and at how the different parts of the earth relate to each other, The Mayan Calendar and the Transformation of Consciousness is an excellent starting point.
