This
is the prototype vessel for the heavily-armored and
heavily-armed warship designed to engage Borg threats to the
Federation. It was designed and constructed at Mars' Utopia
Planitia Yards under the supervision of Lt. Cdr. Benjamin Sisko.
This kit was built with no modifications.
The airbrushed paint job was almost entirely masked with
MicroScale's Micro Mask liquid. It gave very clean and thin
edges. As the Defiant kit had no scored deflector lines, this
was a very helpful masking method.
The
hull basecoat is Model Master Light Ghost Gray. Other major hull
colors are Dark Ghost Gray, Medium Gray, Intermediate Blue and
Sand. The nacelle grilles and navigational deflector are
Mat Sky Blue with a coat of Horizon Blue. The impulse engines
and Bussard collectors are painted fluorescent Fire Red.
The red striping is all from the Defiant decal sheet but in some
areas they were cut to more closely match the filming miniature.
The yellow RCS thrusters are decals cut from a large yellow
marking from a truck model kit.
The underside white windows were Dremeled to round shapes to
correct the notches molded into the kit.
The second starship Defiant was constructed in Mars orbit under
Lt. Cmdr. Benjamin Sisko and officially launched from the
Antares Ship yards.
