Hobart:Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, is situated in southeastern Tasmania, on the Derwent River. Mount Wellington (1270 m/4167 ft) rises just west of Hobart, and the city is spread out on its lower slopes. Hobart is the largest port of Tasmania. Exports include wool, ores, lumber, grain, hops, and fruit. Among the industrial establishments of Hobart are foundries, tanneries, flour and lumber mills, breweries, and factories producing woolen goods. The University of Tasmania (1890) is located in Hobart. The city was founded as a penal colony in 1804 and named Hobart Town for the British statesman Lord Robert Hobart. Hobart Town, which became the capital of Tasmania in 1825, was chartered as a city in 1857. In 1967 a bushfire spread to the outskirts of Hobart, killing 53 people and destroying nearly 1000 homes.
