The Wolf Legion - Test of Steel
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique German L5R Storyline Tournament
The Forgotten Legion

Despite the warming weather, the night still brought a chill on the wind, and Saigorei
leaned closer to the fire to warm his old bones. This abominable duty was not kind on
his aging frame, and he shook his head in disgust as he thought of the depths to which
he and his fellow Wolf Legionnaires had fallen. He glanced around at the ruins that
surrounded him. There was not a fully intact building within sight.

A few had survived, to be sure, but most were in the portion of the city that the upstart
Yotsu band had claimed as their protectorate, leaving the Legion with nothing more
than a dilapidated corpse of a city. What little they had been able to rebuild had been
destroyed by a recent quake, essentially undoing all of their efforts since Otosan Uchi's
destruction. With a sour look on his face, Saigorei grumbled to himself under his breath.

"What's that?" came a voice from the shadows.

"Nothing," rumbled Saigorei.

A young woman's form emerged from the darkness, bow held at the ready.
"I heard you say something, father. What was it?"

"I said it was nothing," he repeated. "Go back to sentry duty." He say by the fire quietly
for a few moments, then scowled at the girl who had refused to move.

"You are every bit as stubborn as your mother."

"I take it from my father, actually," she said blandly.

Saigorei shook his head at his daughter. "I said 'we deserve better than this', Jineko.
That is all."

"Why do you say that?" She seemed surprised.

Saigorei opened his arms to indicate the ruins around them. "Do you think this is
the legacy I wanted for you? Is this what I am to leave to my daughter after decades of
loyal service? This is not what Toturi would have wanted. This is not how he would
have treated loyal servants of the Throne."

"It is what the Winds would have of us," Jineko said quietly. "What else do we have
but our duty? Is that not what the Wolf Legion truly stands for?"

"No," said Saigorei, rising from his seat. "The Legion was formed because Toturi
believed in the safety of the Empire above all else. He was a man who knew when to
embrace bushido and when to cast tradition aside. Now his children squabble over
the Empire we saved while they leave us here to rot. Every day we hear more rumors
of war, yet we are squandered in this miserable place."

"There is nothing else for us. Toturi is dead."

"Then it is time we found another who will lead us in his place," Saigorei said with
surprising vigor. "There are those in the Empire who share Toturi's passion. His
devotion. Surely one of them can benefit from the Wolf Legion's allegiance."

Jineko looked at her father quizzically. "Why not you, father?"

"I am no leader," the old man said, shaking his head. "I am a soldier. But I know a
leader when I find one." He pointed to the southwest. "And somewhere out there is
|one who will help us remind the Empire of who and what we truly are."

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Forgotten Legion. The most loyal and devoted followers of Toturi were the men
and women known as the Wolf Legion. Former ronin, the Black Lion united them
and reminded them of all they once were. Under his leadership, they became an army
that shook the foundation of the Empire. When Toturi ascended to the throne, the
Wolf Legion became his trusted yojimbo and the vanguard of his Imperial Legions.

Now they have been left to guard the ashes of Otosan Uchi while Toturi's children
struggle for control of his flagging Empire. Now the Wolf Legion looks for a new leader,
for one who shares the virtues and commitment of the great Toturi. One samurai shall
lead them back to the forefront of the Empire, if only they can find one worthy of their
loyalty.

Bolstered by their children and a new generation of disillusioned ronin, the Wolf Legion
will rise up from the ashes of Otosan Uchi and make their name heard again. A member
of the winner's faction will be selected as the spiritual heir of Toturi's legacy by the Wolf
Legion and shall receive their pledge of loyalty, gaining valuable allies for their family
and clan.

Should the Horde win, the Legion will become Lost, joining Daigotsu's corrupted Horde.

Should the Nezumi win, the Legion will join no clan, and will add the forces of a small
Nezumi tribe to their ranks.
