Subject: [dragon] Dragon wins the Greek
Kotei:)
Greetings my Dragon Brothers,
I bring news of joy. We finally have a kotei
win, with a little help from
the Crane...
(cut to excerpt of the report I am working on)
I know it is usual when reporting a storyline
event to first go into the
report of the actual games played, but for me, the Greek Kotei
was not about
the actual tournament play, but about the spirit of the game
and why I love
it so.
The main story of the Kotei for me, did not
start and finish with the final
game of Crane vs. Dragon, but had started months ago. For those
who do not
know me, I am a Dragon fanatic (I haven't gotten around to getting
the
tattoo yet, but I will), and I love the concept of my Clan. I
also love
dueling. Andreas Stavroupolos, Crane Warlord, is a dear friend
of mine, but
due to the fact that I haven't figured out what the word tact
means yet, has
been the butt of many a joke about his cheesy Kosaten Shiro decks,
we tend
to get into arguments that send most of our friends into fits
of laughter.
Thus, at one of the Season of the Shadowlands tournaments that
I had
forgotten my deck, I played with Kakita Dueling Academy, and
soundly
outdueled everyone to death, and coming to the finals, I faced
the local
Shadowlands player, that wanted to bribe me into conceding, so
that he might
name the Crane as the Clan that would get nastiness performed
into me. The
thing is that I do not concede to Shadowlands, and doubly so
when I am
playing a deck of the Clan that is to be corrupted. I proceeded
to turn down
the lucrative offer, and tell him the reasons why. Shimazu was
delighted for
the Crane win, and the fact that I had not taken the bribe, and
proclaimed
that as Kakita, he owed a debt to the Dragon, and would proceed
to concede
the next storyline tournament he was able to my clan. Mind you,
this was a
small tournament, so it became sort of joke between us (especially
when he
left me 9th at the Mousaka Championship storyline event with
him being 8th
by virtue of a single tie breaker point:).
Cut to just before the start of the Kotei
final. Shimazu has just taken
victory over another Crane, and my Dragon brother has just defeated
the
dreaded Shadowlands PK-kill/dishonor lockdown/attack that is
really tough to
beat. Shimazu walks up to me smiles and says that he will concede
the Kotei
to the Dragon if he wins. I say nothing to my Dragon brother,
merely
proceeding to give him a few tips against Andreas's deck which
has been honed
on my carcass for ages (I went 4-1 in the Swiss taking 4th spot
and Top
Dragon position, with my only loss to Andreas reaching 40 honor
a turn after
him, since I was at 39 and could not get the point of honor I
needed to win,
but having one of the most enjoyable games I have ever played).
Andreas then
proceeds to unleash the power of cheesiness on my Clan brother
(having 2
deeds not words and 2 Imperial Edicts on his hand, which he did
not even
have to use). Then, Shimazu, after shaking the hand of our Clan
Brother
(whose name sadly I cannot recall until I find the list with
the rankings),
proceeded to concede and explain the reasons why he was conceding.
The look
on was priceless, and the applause was thunderous.
For me, this is the reason that L5R is a card
game unlike any other, because
you have people that treat this game as a role-playing experience,
and give
you priceless moments. I bow in respect to Andreas, for being
a true Kakita
samurai, and proving that irksome thought the Kosaten Shiro cheesegrinder
might be, there are those that love the Crane Clan for what it
is supposed
to embody.
