Get Set for Your Pet!
What to get before you get your pet!
Tree Frogs
- Cage size -- Tanks work best, keeping humidity high and warmth in. The size will depend on the type of frog you are getting, but try to get the largest possible.
- Substrate -- Try something that holds moisture well without becoming moldy. There are several types of substrate amde specifically for reptiles such as Bed-A-Beast, Repti-Bark, and Forest Floor. Any of those should work well.
- Water -- A definite necessity! Not only should you provide your frog with a water container that he can get right into, but you should also mist the tank once daily. Tree frogs will dry out if there is insufficient water!
- Food -- Most tree frogs will only eat live prey, such as crickets, wax worms, and other insects. These can be purchased at pet stores, or you can try catching your own insects. If you do, you should coat the insects with a vitamin powder, since they will not be gut-loaded (that is, fed vitamin-rich food) like farm-raised crickets.

- Decorations -- Give your frog someplace to hide. Plastic plants work well and are easy to keep clean. Some can be attached to the walls of the tank by suction cups. I prefer the most natural-looking set-up possible, but any decorations will be fine, as long as they are designed for terrarium use.
- Heat Source -- not always necessary, depending on where you live. Try not to overheat the tank, or you risk drying it out and killing your frog! If you are going to use a heat lamp or undertank heater, be sure there is also an unheated part of the tank!
- Book on Tree Frogs -- As always, you should own at least one and read as many as you can BEFORE you get tree frogs!
- The Tree Frog! -- Look for a well-fed, well-colored specimen. Be sure you know what a healthy one looks like before you choose one! Many species can be housed together...it is always best to do your research and ask the advice of your trusted pet store worker before mixing!
