Shakuhachi

For a great number of years I have been playing the classical grand piano and had a hard time playing some of the famous classical music. I soon got tired of it when I began to take greater interest in my education. After the headaches and long, very long night I finished college and I had a good understanding of physics. I heard a song that was being played on a Japanese game and wondered what instrument made the song. Being familiar with music I began to look into flutes of the world. On the internet I was able to download sample of the sounds made by the Japanese's flute-the Shakuhachi and soon realized that the song that I heard was similar to its hunting sound. This begins the world of flute according to me and I have been working hard to make my own. You will soon know why if your not familiar with the flute world.

Ignorant as I was with the world of the Flute I decided that I was go and buy a Shakuhachi and learn to play it. Playing the this type of flute is not easy and getting a good one will cost you a few hundreds of dollars. I first bought a whistle made by the South Americans which had six front holes and one thumb hole. I research flutes of South America and the Andes and found that they produce a flute called the Quena or Kena. This flute sounds similar to a Shakuhachi but without the hunting effects and flexibility. The Quena has a notch in the bamboo that looks like a hole in the bamboo and then cutting the bamboo so that the hole is cut in half. The blowing edge is the formed with an angle like someone took a round file and filed the wedge that starts from the opposite edge of the hold. Use link on the menu to see picture of the blowing edge

I began to study the physics of different types of flutes and their sound. I was able to learn enough theory to write a small Windows 9x console application that will calculate the tone hole position for a transverse flute. I'm current trying to write a similar application for Native American flutes, Shakuhachi flutes, and Quena. There are a few other applications that I can provide that will help you with the tuning of the flute. Due to my limited knowledge I can only provide the information but I will be updating this site.
