My Applications
Tuning Fork

To solve some of my flute problems I use the programs listed in the menu. A few of the applications were written by me to help in the tone hole calculations. Enjoy the use of these programs to learn how to make your own flutes. I will include some applications that I have downloaded from other flute websites. My applications were written for Windows 98 SE, ME and Windows 2000 Professional. Please read the disclaimer before downloading and using any programs from this website. I wrote my programs so that you will not have to install them. For the programs that were added that was not written by me you can just delete the files and folders to uninstall them. There are many sites that offer information about making flutes of all types. I have learned that the physics works but it is only an approximation and not exact in calculations. Please remember that you will have to work with a trial and error method to obtain the best results for the timber that you use.

My method is to use the program to get an approximation and them create a flute and tune the flute by widening the tone holes. Depending on what timber I'm using I will use a drill of a hot poker made by myself. For PVC or Acrylic I will use a 5/8" drill bit and make pilot holes at the positions the program give me but this is done hole by hole. The 6th hole is the first I drill and them I will tune it using the tuning program I downloaded and a cone shaped grinning stone with a Dremil tool. I will keep grinning the tone hole until I get the desired frequency and hole shape. As for Bamboo I use a hot poker that I created using construction grade wall iron rods. Take about two inches of the iron rod and make a wooden handle for it. I then used a grinning stone such as a grinning machine and make the head pointed like that of a cone. Make the hypotenuse angle or the surface slope about 60 degrees. The deeper you push the hot poker the wider the hole in the Bamboo. Remember that bamboo is sensitive to heat so be careful when applying force to the hot poker.

Fork_e is a program written by a programmer/musician to resonate at the frequencies that is set by the user. This is for intermediate to professional that tune instruments by ear. It can be quite challenging for the beginner who is learning to tune by ear. Try it!

Metronome is a program that gives the musician a constant beat for musical timing. The tone can be varied for what every type of timing you have on your sheet music. 4-4, 2-4, 6-8 and 3-4 can all be selected. Try it!

Tuner is the best program out of the bunch listed on this page. I wish I had written a program like this one but I'm not that advance in programming just yet. For all the flute makers out there this is the program for tuning your flute, providing you have your tone holes already marked out. Tuner allows you to see a visual sign of the frequency your which you seek. It can be either set to a note or it can be in automatic. The help files are included. Try it!

Good luck with your flute building.
