American Black Duck
Anas rubripes
Seneca County, NY
***Federal - MBTA***
***NY - Game Species***
This dabbling duck is very closely related to the
Mallard. In fact, the two hybridize frequently. A summer breeder
and winter resident, Black Ducks are dark brown to black, with a contrasting
gray head, and a purple speculum (wing patch.) Males have a yellow
bill, females are similar but are slightly paler brown and have a dull
green bill with black spots. Where they coexist Black Ducks prefer
forested areas where Mallards prefer open marshes. In areas of heavy
deforestation (much of NY) the two have come into contact and there is
evidence that female Black Ducks choose male Mallards to breed. Hybrids
show a blending of characteristics, being dull like a Black Duck, but with
traces of the Mallard color. This loss of habitat and genetic pollution
by Mallards is causing a continued decline in Black Duck numbers and there
are special regulations in effect on the hunting of Blacks in order to
help combat the decline.
