Canada Goose
Branta canadensis
Seneca County, NY

This is the popular "Wild Goose," and with their
"V" shaped flocks and their loud calling Canada Geese are one of the signs
of spring in the area. Although a good number of Canada Geese do
migrate through the area a large number also winter here, spending their
time on the larger lakes and in plowed fields feeding on fallen crops or
grazing on grasses. One of the most common breeding waterfowl, Canada
Geese are becoming a nuisance in some areas because of overpopulation.
They tie up traffic, mess the ground with their droppings, and graze grass
down to the mud. To many people this is reason to call up arms, but
to me these are inconveniences we can put up with to share our land with
the wildlife. Hunters take a good number of Canada Geese every year
and the bag limits are increasing as a way to lower population levels.
Still a pair of Geese with their yellow fluffy goslings following is a
common sight throughout the state. Canada Geese serve as a warning
to other animals when predators are near. They strut around and honk
loudly when they feel threatened. Birders can use this to their advantage
because they will often be alert and panic when an Eagle or Goshawk flies
over.
