Great Egret
Casmerodius albus
Seneca County, NY
***Federal - MBTA***
Great Egrets are another large distinctive member
of the Heron Family. They are much less common than Great Blue Herons,
but can be found in the state in some numbers. They breed on the
coastal plain, and are expanding their range as a breeding bird in western
New York. Great Egrets are most often seen after breeding is over
and the young have dispersed. Because of their bright white plumage
they can be seen from quite a distance. Also nests in rookeries similar
to the Great Blue Herons, often several species share a rookery.
In days past they were hunted heavily for their long breeding plumes which
were used to adorn ladies' hats. They have since recovered from their
historic low numbers.
