Glaucous Gull
Larus hyperboreus
Monroe County, NY
***Federal - MBTA***
Glaucous Gulls are an uncommon winter visitor.
They are one of our three "white-winged gulls"- these are the large gulls
that lack the extensive black in the wingtips. White-winged gulls
include Glaucous, Iceland, and Thayer's (at least in juvenile plumage.)
Glaucous are different from the other two by size, shape of the head, and
two-toned bill. Like Iceland and Thayer's Gulls, Glaucous gulls breed
in northern Canada, and spend the winters in New York where the water doesn't
freeze. Generally they are uncommon outside the ocean, Lake Ontario,
and the Niagara River (Iceland are slightly more regular inland.)
When found in New York Glaucous Gulls are typically seen among flocks of
other gulls, including Greater Black-backed and Herring.
