Northern Mockingbird
Mimus polyglottos
Livingston County, NY
***Federal - MBTA***
The famous Mockingbird really does live up to its name. They have a beautiful voice and like all members of the family they mimick other sounds, although they do seem to excel at it. Their melodious song carries for a long distance. Mockingbirds sing all hours of the day, even after dark on clear nights. Although not the most common of our breeding birds they are increasing in numbers and can be found in small numbers throughout most of the state. Mockingbirds seem to have benefited from the urban sprawl as they are common in many of the Rochester suburbs. They also exist in large numbers in the farmlands and agricultural areas of Livingston County. Although not always conspicuous by sight their song clearly gives away their presence.
