Tundra Swan
Cygnus columbianus
Seneca County, NY
***Federal - MBTA
***NY - Game Species***
One of New York's three swans, Tundra Swans are also
our most common. They can be seen in migration on most of the lakes,
rivers, wetlands, and along the coast in lagoons and bays. The Tundra
Swan is different from the Trumpeter Swan as they are smaller, with a shorter
neck, and an indentation where the bill meets the head. They also
have a distinct yellow spot on the bill near the eye, but that can only
be seen at close range. A Tundra Swan's head and neck is often stained
rust-brown by tannins in the water where they feed. This swan breeds
in the high arctic and winters on the coast, but it is seen inland during
both spring and fall migrations. Formerly called "Whistling Swan."
