American Wigeon
Anas americana
Seneca County, NY
***Federal - MBTA***
***NY - Game Species***
Another one of NY's dabbling ducks, American Wigeon
is one of our more common fall and spring migrants. They are known
to winter on the coastal plain. They have recently established small
breeding colonies in the state, mostly in larger well-maintained wetlands.
A pretty duck, Wigeon are a slight red-purple and gray. Males have
a white forehead and green splash on the sides of the head that females
lack. The white forehead earned them the old name "Baldpate."
The related and similar Eurasion Wigeon is an uncommon,
but regular spring and winter visitor and are similar, but less contrasting
in color.
