Common Arrowhead
Sagittaria latifolia
Chemung County, NY
One of the more common semi-aquatic plants. Common Arrowhead grows in shallow water such as ditches, pond edges, marsh areas. The leaves, by which this plant gets its common name, are large (up to 12") and arrow shaped. Some leaves are quite broad, while others are skinny and compressed. The flower is white with a yellow center and has three petals. There are several other species of arrowhead found in New York State. Many do not have arrowshaped leaves, but the white, three petaled flower is a dead givaway. This plant is also closely related to the Water Plantains.
