Wild Bergamont
Monarda fistulosa
Ontario County, NY
This is one of a number of showy Monarda species in the state. All are members of the mint family and are characterized by the flowers in dense heads, stamens that protrude from the flower, and a narrow upper lip. Bergamont grows somewhat tall 2-4' high, and the flower heads are 1.5-2" across. The flowers are a pale lavender/ pinkish color, which helps separate it from other members of the genus. Wild Bergamont can be found growing on dry hillsides and wood margins.
