Calopogon tuberosus
Genesee County, NY

***NY- Vulnerable***

One of New York's protected native orchids, Pink Swamp Orchid (or Swamp Pink) is one of my favorites.  Growing in swampy, wet grasslands, it is local in distribution, but can be quite common at a known population site.  It is interesting in that the flower's labellum is actually at the top of this orchid, while most members of the family have the lip at the bottom.  A showy flower, although somewhat small, Pink Swamp Orchid is easily overlooked when not in bloom.  It's single, grasslike leaf blends in with the surrounding vegetation.  Look for this plant during early to mid summer (this flower was photographed in late June) in the type of areas that hold sundew, Rose Pogonia, and sedges.
