Species Description- Wood Lily
Lilium philadelphicum

Wood Lily
Wood Lily
Lilium philadelphicum
Genesee County, NY

***NY- Vulnerable***

This species is one of a number of large showy flowers in the genus Lilium native to New York.  Wood Lily is a unique Lilium in that the flower grows erect, while many of the other native species nod down.  This is an impressive flower, the petals are up to 4" long and bright orange with purple spotting.  The petals are constricted at the base.  The entire plant stands 2-3' high and the leaves are arranged in whorls.  Newcomb's Wildflower Guide lists dry thickets and open woods as habitat, but the one pictured above was growing in a wet, grassy meadow.  Sometimes the flowers forget to read the books.
