Mayapple

Mayapples are a common plant in much of New York
state. They are frequently found in rich woods and pasture edges
where they can be identified.by their large umbrella-like leaves and their
white flowers with 6-9 petals and yellow center. The large fruit
is up to 2" long, greenish yellow, and edible at the right season, but
poisonous at others. Mayapples are in the Barberry family, many members
of which are strong hallucinogens. Wood
Turtles and Box Turtles are known to feed on the fruit as are many
species of birds and mammals.
