Podophyllum peltatum
Monroe County, NY

Mayapples are a common plant in much of New York state.  They are frequently found in rich woods and pasture edges where they can be identified.by their large umbrella-like leaves and their white flowers with 6-9 petals and yellow center.  The large fruit is up to 2" long, greenish yellow, and edible at the right season, but poisonous at others.  Mayapples are in the Barberry family, many members of which are strong hallucinogens.  Wood Turtles and Box Turtles are known to feed on the fruit as are many species of birds and mammals.
