Northern Maidenhair Fern
Adiantum pedatum
Tioga County, NY
A very distinctive member of the fern family, Northern
Maidenhair grows in rich, wet woods. It is not the most common of
our ferns, but I like it because I can identify it. (Ferns are obviously
not my strong point.) This dainty species has its first division
in a whorld (circular) pattern. The second division contains the
leaflets. The stalk is dark purple to black which offsets the color
of the green leaflets. The sporangia in this species are found under
the leaflet edges.
