Species Description- Yellow Morel

Yellow Morel
Yellow Morel
Morchella esculenta
Wyoming County, NY

An immediately recognizable group, Morels are coveted by mushroom hunters for their large size and edibility.  Supposedly they have a steak-like flavor, although I have never eaten one.  Morels can be recognized by their large heads with many deep pits giving a honeycomb appearence.  The stalk is paler than the head and often has an enlarged base.  This individual mushroom has fallen under its own weight (it is large at 8" long) and bent the stem.  As with all mushrooms this is only the spore-producing reproductive part.  Morels are not common, but neither are they endangered.  They are found under hardwood trees, especially cottonwoods, and apple orchards and may be found from April to early June.
