Genesee County, NY

***NY- Vulnerable***

A beautiful, but local orchid that grows in wet meadows and bogs, Rose Pogonia is small, but eye-catching.  It is easily recognized by its pale pink color, for which it gets its name, that covers both sepals and petals, and by the hairy labellum that gives it its alternate name, Snakemouth.  (ophio=snake glossoides=mouthed)  Rose Pogonia grows between 6 and 12 inches tall, has one leaf clasping the lower stem, and a sterile bract just below the flower.  Flowers are usually solitary, but there are sometimes two on one stalk.  It blooms in late spring and early summer and can often be seen blooming alongside Pink Swamp Orchid.
