Fringed Polygala
Polygala paucifolia
Livingston County, NY
One of New York State's many members of the mint
family, Fringed Polygala has larger flowers that most native mints.
This plant also goes by the name "Flowering Wintergreen" and "Gaywings."
Fringed Polygala grows in rich, moist woods, and blooms in late spring
to early summer. There are only a few flowers per plant when compared
to most mints, but they are large, rose colored and showy. The entire
plant is 3"-6" high. Fringed Polygala is somewhat common in appropriate
habitat.
