Slime Mold
Species unknown
Monroe County, NY
Slime Molds are a unique group of living things.
There is still much debate as to whether they should be grouped with the
fungi or the protists. They serve the same purpose as fungi in that
they break down organic matter. They are commonly seen in flower
gardens on mulch, although the common species found in gardens does not
closely resemble the one pictured. While considered an ugly pest
by gardeners slime molds have their place in the ecosystem and should be
seen as the beneficial creatures they are.
