Series Description- Amphibian Emergence
Chorus Frogs

Western Chorus Frog habitat
Western Chorus Frog habitat

After a long winter comes the warming spring.  And with spring comes frogs, salamanders, snakes and turtles.  The amphibian emergence is to me one of the most magical things in nature.  Where once there was seemingly nothing there is soon the sound of Chorus Frogs, males of all these hidden species begin fervently searching for love.  Chorus Frogs will become active at the beginning of a warming spell.  They migrate to the ponds and ephemeral pools where they will breed and a few days later begin to sing.  (Click on the habitat picture above to hear Chorus Frogs in song.)  The females hear males singing and choose their mate based on voice.  Of course, satellite males may intercept the female on her way to the singer.  (The things we will do for love.)
