Common Carp
Cyprinus carpio
Seneca County, NY
Another boneheaded introduction from Europe/Asia,
Carp have never become as popular a gamefish here as they are there.
Probably because we have many decent fish that are much more palatable.
Nevertheless they are large and strong and put up a good fight. Carp
are bottom feeders related to goldfish and suckers and grow to 3.5 feet
long. They have become quite common in the lakes rivers and streams
of New York and have probably caused the decline of certain aquatic species
by destroying the aquatic plants needed by the eggs and young.
