Wetlands in Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge
Seneca County, NY
Another of my favorite habitats. Wetlands are
an important part of New York's history, although most have been filled
in and destroyed. This is unfortunate as the biomass in these areas
can be absolutely staggering. Reptiles, amphibians, waterfowl, fish,
and especially invertebrates make thier homes in the various types of wetland
found in the state. To be considered a wetland water does not have
to be present year round, neither does it need to break the surface.
Wetlands are identified and classified not by the amount of water, but
by the type of plant found growing there. There are many different
types of wetlands and I have tried to cover them in other areas of the
site.
