Seven deadly sins. Seven ways to die.
Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman star in this searing psychological thriller about two detectives on the trail of a vicious serial killer who chooses his victims according to the seven deadly sins. Also features a riveting performance by Gwyneth Paltrow and brilliantly directed by David Fincher.
This movie is disturbing. Not that anything is wrong with that, but it is a powerful and disturbing film, that some people are very ill at ease with. Having said that, I love this movie. The nature of the crimes is as the title suggests, based on the seven deadly sins; Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Lust, Pride, Envy and Wrath. Each of the crimes are dark and grisly, as is the mind of the killer who taunts us and the police down to the very end.
The film breaks the formula of the tired buddy cop picture routine and gives us two interesting characters who face a very unique series of crimes. Freeman's character is on his last week before retirement. Pitt is the gung-ho hotshot. Both are paired up and have a very different homicide to contend with. The veteran Freeman knows that this is not an isolated crime, he knows it is only the beginning of something far more sinister. He convinces and guides Pitt on how to get into the mind of this guy and understand his methods in a way to get him before he strikes again.
When I first saw this in the theatre I wondered why it was so dark, not thematically, which it is, but lighting wise. This transer on DVD went back to the source and we have a pristine copy of the movie that is much better than the one we had in theatrical release.
Overall, this is an awesome disc and worth the wait, unfortunately there were some of us who purchased the bare bones version a few years ago. My advice if the movie is like Seven, or The Rock, I would wait a little while until there is a special edition, because certain films cannot be confined to a movie only disc for long.
This double disc is packed, even the packaging (fashioned to look like the killers notebooks) is cool.
