***** Nick watched as Morgan said goodbye to Gabrial and exhaled, wishing he could let some of the frustation inside out. He would do anything to be in Jake’s position, to go home with Morgan and just exist with her. He didn’t realize how irreparable the situation was until he saw her tonight. Before, he had some hope that she would maybe want him back, that she really did love him like she said she did that night. He felt a stab of guilt when he thought back to that night. He wasn’t half as drunk as he led her to believe and he knew exactly what he was doing but couldn’t stop himself. He sipped distastefully at his beer and stood up. “ Turning in already?” Rick asked, looking up. “ Yeah, I’m tired.” He said goodnight to everyone and climbed the stairs to his second floor room. He paused before heading in and pushed the door to Gabrial’s room open. He scanned the room and walked over to the bulletin board where there were some pictures of Gabrial and his friends. Hoping he could take one of Morgan without Gabe noticing. He studied each picture and his eyes landed on one of Morgan and her brother. It was almost completly covered by another one so Nick figured it wouldn’t be missed too much as he untacked it and stuck it in his pocket. He left the room and walked into his, needing some sleep, weary from the day’s events...
***** Morgan pulled away from Jake’s kiss and forced a smile. “ I’m really sleepy, Jake,” She said, pulling some blanket over her as he nodded. For some reason, this irked her nerves. He was always so nice to her, regardless of what she said to him. “ What’s wrong?” He asked, noticing her sudden stiffness. “ Nothing,” She sighed and got out of the bed. “ Nothing’s wrong? Why are you?-...” She looked at him. “ I’m gonna check on Lia,” She informed him as she pulled on her robe, shivering against the draft. “ You just laid her down,” “ I thought I heard her crying,” She lied, turning to leave. “ You’re cold. You stay in bed and I’ll go check on her,” He said, moving to get out of bed. “ I said I’d do it,” Morgan sharply stated, her words a lot harsher than she intended. “ Fine,” He backed off and studied her, concerned as she walked out of the room. She heard the bed creak as he reached to turn off the light. Walking into the ‘nursery’ Jake had in his house for Amelia, she peered in at the crib. Her daughter was still wide awake and Morgan reached to pick her up. “ Not sleepy, Sweetheart?” She crooned, the moon reflecting off Amelia’s eyes. Morgan sighed and sat down at the window seat, wishing Nick wasn’t in her thoughts. She couldn’t forget the hurt expression he had when she said hi to him and it made her regret going to dinner. She brought her legs up and stretched them out on the seat, staring outside at the snowy lawn. Not a car was in sight and this just added to her lonliness. For a second, she contemplated calling Nick but decided against it. It would just add to both of their problems and confuse him even more. She looked down at Amelia again and stroked her cheek absently. For almost an hour, she sat by the window, lost in her thoughts, and Amelia had fallen asleep. Morgan finally stood up, careful not to wake her daughter as she put her back in the crib. The floorboards creaked as she walked across the hall to Jake’s room. His eyes were half closed when she walked in. He watched her slip out of her robe and climb back into bed next to him. He hesitated. “ Amelia fell asleep?” “ Yeah. She was fussy so I stayed with her,” She told him, trying to push out the sadness she was feeling. “ Mor? Are you angry?” “...No,” “ Do you want to talk about something?” “ No. Everything’s fine. I shouldn’t have snapped, I’m sorry. I have a headache,” She apologized, wishing it was Nick next to her. She slid closer to Jake, needing to feel warmth and slid her arm around his chest. “ Goodnight,” ( Mor) “ ‘Night, Hun,” He said and for a moment, Morgan did imagine it was Nick holding her in the darkness...
