***** The Next Day During breakfast, Nick’s cell phone rang. “ Hello?” “ Nick? It’s me...” He stood up and went to take the call in his room. “ Morgan? Hey. How’rya?” He asked, surprised. “ Nick, we need to talk,” “...Ok. About?” “ Can you come over?” “ What? Right now?” “ Yes. Amelia’s asleep, Angela and Todd are at work. This is the only chance we’ll get,” “ Aren’t you at Jake’s?” “ No. He dropped me off here on his way to work,” Nick’s mind was racing as he quickly decided. “ What’s the address?” He asked, grabbing a pen and jotting it down as she recited. “ Don’t tell anyone you’re coming here, Ok?” “ I know, Morgan. I’ve played this game before, remember?” He said, unable to stop the bitterness from creeping into his voice. “ I’ll see you in a little while,” He hung up and went back downstairs. “ Hey, Gabe. I need to go do some stuff. I’ll be back in a few hours” “ Yeah, sure,” Nick grabbed his coat before walking out. The taxi ride over to Morgan’s seemed like a neverending one as the car drove slowly through the patches of ice. Finally, it slowed to a stop in front of a house and Nick paid the driver. “ Thanks,” He said before getting out and going up the walk. She opened the door before he rang the doorbell and pulled him inside before wrapping him in a tight hug. “ Mor-...” His words faltered as the scent of her perfume filled his mind, thinking of how it used to be. “ Nick. I’m sorry,” She murmered, still not letting go. He didn’t know what to say and she finally let go. Their eyes met and Nick could see his pain reflected in her eyes. “ You wanted to talk?” He asked quietly, unsure of what brought the sudden change of attitude. Her face clouded with quick disappointment but she led him to the living room where they both sat on the couch. “ Nick, I did a lot of thinking last night,” She began and Nick listened with half a mind. He didn’t know if he wanted to hear this as much as he thought he did. Before she could venter further, Amelia’s cries echoed from upstairs. She sighed and stood up, Nick following. She turned a questioning gaze to him. “ I wanna see her,” Nick explained, slightly glad for the interruption. He watched as she comforted the child, sitting on the bed. He took in how tired she looked and decided she must have been up half the night too. Finally, Amelia fell asleep again and Morgan turned to Nick. Their was a look in her eyes, slightly desperate. “ Nick, I’m sorry,” She said, her voice thick with emotion as she stood in front of him and brought her lips to his. “ Morgan, we shouldn’t-,” He pushed her away gently and glanced at the clock, needing to avert his eyes from her. “ I didn’t get any sleep at all last night. We can always talk. Lie down with me?” She asked, her face stripped and Nick could see she was hurting. He was about to give in when he thought of how she had acted towards him. “ Morgan, it’s been a year. We need to talk,” “ Nick, I’m sorry. What else can I say?” She sat down next to him, needing to feel his arms around her. Nick sensed this and slipped an arm around her, throwing his caution to the wind and ignoring the fact that this was how he got hurt last time. She leaned against him and once again, he realized how right it felt to have her in his arms again. “ We can talk later,” She repeated sleepily as she pulled away and stretched out on the bed, motioning for him to do the same. He did and in a matter of minutes, both were asleep, tired from the insomnia of the night before...
