***** Nick was awakened by Morgan prodding him on the chest. “ Look, it’s snowing,” She said, her tone quiet and thoughtful. Nick sat up, gently moving out of her sleepy hold. “ What’s wrong?” She asked. “ This.” He said bluntly, squinting in the darkness to look at the clock. “ What time is it? When does everyone get back?” He asked, trying to make his voice gruff so she wouldn’t get the wrong idea. He wanted to make her hurt the way she had made him hurt for the past year. “ Nick-?...” She sat up too and watched his actions as he reached over to the side of the bed to put his shoes back on. “ You can’t go anywhere yet, there’s a major snow storm. The roads are probably blocked. He ignored her and finished lacing up his shoes. “ Nick, what is your problem?” He stared at her all of a sudden, his eyes furious. “ What is my problem? Morgan, how can you ask me that? You’ve been a complete bitch for a past year and you invite me over to talk about things, what happens? We end up in bed all over again!” He exhaled loudly, glaring at her. “ Nick, nothing happened! We were asleep-” “ Morgan, that’s not the point!” He stood up and slipped his coat back on. “ Nick, where are you going?” Morgan cried, exasparated. “ Back to Gabrial’s.” “ I told you, there’s a storm outside!” She stood up and checked the phone. “ The lines are dead, you can’t call for a cab,” “ I am not staying here with you,” Nick muttered, glancing out the window. “ What, Nick? Don’t trust me?” She asked, her tone turning a sultry sarcastic one. “ Not only that, I don’t trust myself,” He went to the door. “ Does that mean you still-” “ Morgan, be quiet. I am in a bad mood now, and I’m stuck in here with you. I don’t feel like arguing,” He snapped. “ Nick-,” She started soflty but he cut her off. “ I swear to God, if you do anything, Morgan, I will walk home. You’re gonna fuck up two lives if you try anything. Make that three,” “ WHose lives?” She demanded. “ Your daughter’s, your boyfriend, and mine,” He stated simply. “ Your’s? If I do remeber correctly, you were the one who- who deceited- me into sleeping eith you. She probably did this too, didn’t she? Jody?” She yelled, and he stopped, his face stony hard. “ You have no right to comment on something you have no clue about,” He said, his tone quiet and icy. SHe met his gaze fiercly but inside knew she had pushed it too far. “ Whatever that could have existed or that did exist for that one night was a decision made by two people, Morgan. Keep that in mind the next time you have a stupid comment to make,” He turned and pulled open the door, shutting it quietly in her face. She stared at the shut door and felt the tears well up again. She inhaled and opened the door a minute later. Glancng at Amelia before she went back downstairs, she wondered how her daughter could have stayed asleep through the noise. She found Nick in the kitchen, sitting quietly at the table, his back to her. She sighed and went to the pantry, grabbing a couple of candles. She lit them and placed them on the table and kitchen counter. “ Are you hungry?” She asked as she pulled open the refridgerator. He didn’t reply and she pulled out stuff to make a sandwich, placing them on the counter. After she finished assemblying her sandwich, Nick stood up and walked to where she was. “ I could have made one for you, if you answered,” Morgan said but he still ignored her. She looked at him for a second before taking her plate to the table and sitting down. “ I have one question for you, did you think of me once while you were here?” He asked quietly, fixing his gaze on the counter. Morgan was quiet for a second. “ Of course I did,” She replied, sighing. “ Bullshit.” He finished making his sandwich and put everything back in the refridgerator. He took his plate and sat at the opposite end of the table and by the candle’s dancing flames, his face looked sorrowful. “ Nick-...” She cut herself off, not knowing what to say anymore. “ Morgan... When I came here, I had in my mind the thought of you and me getting back together,” She waited for him to finish but he didn’t say anything, just ate his sandwich silently. “ I now realize what a fool I’ve been and I’ve wasted a year for you and I can’t like you for that. Maybe you made a smart decision when you left. I guess I’ll walk on the plane two weeks from now with the greater knowledge that you weren’t the one for me, no matter how hard I tried to believe that, and that maybe I can’t even like you as a person anymore,” He sighed, as if regretfully and pushed his half eaten sandwich away. “ Nick, why are you doing this?” Morgan asked grieviously. “ Why am I doing this? I asked myself that when I stayed up thinking about you the first couple of weeks. I asked myself that when I went home for my birthday and thought about you on the plane. I am asking myself right now, sitting in your dining room, eating dinner at your house. You opened up the scars, Morgan. You opened them up and promised to care, promised that you wouldn’t do what everyone else in my life has done. What did you do?” He demanded, staring at her. “ You left. You lied and you left me with the impression that you are nothing more than a liar- a conniving liar who’ll do what she wants but won’t face up to the consequences,” He finished angrily and she felt her rage boil up. “ I am facing the consequences, Nick!” She yelled, pushing her chair back as the tears welled up. “ Tell me, Morgan, how? Are you the one wondeing why-” “ Shut up, Nick!” She picked up her plate and went to the trashcan. “ How, Morgan?” He asked, his voice taunting. “ Go away, Nick!” She slammed the plate in the sink. “ Now you want me to go away? A while ago, you were begging me to stay,” “ I AM facing the consequences in ways you would never know,” She spat at him and he froze, not liking that look in her eyes. “ What are you talking about?” He asked suspiciously, standing up and regretting asking the question, scared of the answer. “ Forget it,” She said, her voice quiet as well. “ No, it’s too late now, Morgan. Tell me what you meant,” He said, his voice raising slightly. He grabbed her shoulders, forcing her to look at him, his heart beating rapidly. At the exact same moment, upstairs, Amelia let out a cry as she woke up. Nick stared at Morgan, realization dawning on him. A thousand thoughts rushed through his head and he let go of Morgan. “ I don’t believe you,” He said, his voice extremly quiet and hoarse. Morgan let out her tears and Nick looked at her disgustedly. “ Nick-” Nick stalked out of the kitchen. Morgan heard the front door slam a second later and she stood up shakily to quiet Amelia, wondering how on earth he was planning on getting back to Gabrial’s...
