"Millie, it's time to go," William said softly.
"The plane leaves in 2 hours and you know how long it takes to go through
security."
William knew that this moment would be terribly difficult for his sister
and his heart ached for her.
"Can't we wait just a little bit longer, Will? This place holds so
many happy memories for me. You see where that young lady is sitting?" Will
looked and nodded.
"That's exactly where I was sitting when Martin walked into my life.
Oh, Will, he was so tall and handsome and his smile! Oh how I loved it when he
smiled. We would sit and talk for hours in the little cafe next door. Our time
was filled with such joy and laughter."
Millie wiped her eyes with a hankie and sighed.
"Oh, sweet Millie, those memories will be forever in your heart.
They aren't frozen here. They will go with you," Will said as he looked at
his watch.
I don't want to go, Will. This is where I belong. Martin may have passed
on ahead of me, but this has always been home. It's where I spent most of my
life, all my happy moments and it's where Martin and I were so gloriously
happy."
"Millie, if you don't go to New York and start the treatments, you
might as well resign yourself to die," Will asserted. "What would I do
without my sister? Who would remind me to take my pills or that I had an
appointment? Who would I share a laugh with remembering the days when we lived
on that old farm with eccentric old Aunt Georgette?"
Millie laughed at the memory despite her heavy heart. Since they were
kids, Will had a way of making Millie laugh, of bringing her out of the
"dumps" as he called her sad moments.
"Okay, Will, you win," Millie said with resignation. "Who
would watch over you if I were gone?" she teased. "Two old codgers
watching out for each other, that's what we are. We've both lived good lives,
Will. And, we have always been there for each other, haven't we?"
"You bet, Sis! And we will be till the end!" Will said as he
offered his sister an arm to help her get up off the sofa.
"You know what, Will?" Millie asked as they made their way to
the door.
"What?"
"I bet that Martin and your Jennie are glad that we aren't alone in
this world. I believe that they are pleased that we have each other to finish
out life with. And, when we do, they'll both be waiting when it's time for us to
go."
"You always were the philosopher in the family, Millie," Will
said with a smile.
As William hailed a cab, Millie looked at the boarded up cafe where
Martin had proposed to her and she remembered how they both cried tears of joy
when she accepted. Yes, it was all in her heart and it was time to say good-bye
to the place that witnessed a lifetime of enduring love.
"Come on, Millie. We have a plane to catch," Will said
softly as he opened the cab door for her. When they were settled into the cab
and it sped off into traffic, Millie could hear the book closing on a
wonderfully written chapter in her life.
"It will be alright, Sis. Whatever dragons life sends to us, we will
slay them together," Will said with a smile. "We will take no
prisoners!"
"No prisoners!" Millie said, as they sped off into a future
that they would not have to face alone and each in their own hearts, were very
grateful.
