Christina
became Queen at the age of six, when her father, Gustaf Adolf died. She
falls in love with the Spanish ambassador (Gilbert). As her beloved country
does not accept the relation with him she is gving her abdication at the
age of 28. Garbo had aprroval for script, cast and director! Her last
film with John Gilbert, her former love of 1927. By the way: In this movie
she is particularily active, dynamic and laughing a couple of times (so
"Ninotchka" isn't the film where she was laughing for the very
first time).
The movie became
cult in gay as lesbian circles and bars - surprisingly enough - as she
just gives her waitress a brief kiss on the mouth, main subject is the
relation between her and Gilbert.
He got the part because
of her protection inbetween MGM. 1927 it was not at last Gilbert who made
her a big star in Hollywood (she got the main role beside him, he insisted,
that letters of newcomer Garbo on "Flesh and the Devil" were
printed as big as his ones). He was the best paid actor worldwide in those
times; unfortunately his career did not survive the change to sound. Garbo
always spoke respectfully about her former friend and protector who died
a few years later. In "Grand Hotel" she played together with
Ina Claire, Gilberts widow then. |

Der Schatten der Garbo reichte mittlerweile so
weit, daß sie das Skript, die Schauspieler und den Regisseur ihrer neuesten
Produktion bestimmen durfte: Königin Christine erklomm den schwedischen
Thron im Alter von 6 Jahren als ihr Vater Gustaf Adolf starb. Sie genießt
große Verehrung bei der Bevölkerung, die allerdings reserviert auf ihre
Liebe zu einem spanischen Gesandten reagiert. In der Rolle von John Gilbert,
durch dessen Einfluß die Karriere der Garbo 6 Jahre zuvor einen Aufschwung
bekam. Da sie ihn nicht heiraten darf verzichtet sie im Alter von 28 Jahren
auf den Thron.
In der Realität war Christine tatsächlich
der letzte weibliche Regent des schwedischen Thrones bis Königin Sylvia
in unseren Tagen. Obwohl der Film vom Zusammenspiel (das letzte Mal) von
Greta und John Gilbert lebt, wurde der Film ein Klassiker in Kreisen homoerotischer
Kultur. Vielleicht wegen einer kurzen Szene mit ihrer Dienerin Elizabeth
Young, der sie einen Kuß auf den Mund gibt. Der Film war sehr erfolgreich
und zeigt diesmal eine quicklebendige und agile Garbo mit enormen Tatendrang
und Bewegung. Übrigens lacht sie herzlich mehrere Male in dem Film, also
nicht das erste Mal später in "Ninotschka". |

Christine
de Suède est une femme libre au sens plein du terme: elle s'habille et chevauche
comme un garçon. En revanche, ses liaisons amoureuses défrayent la chronique.
Mais il lui faut se marier. Son ancien amant, Magnus, voudrait la voir épouser
l'ennuyeux prince Charles, ca qui serait une sécurité pour lui. Mais Christine
refuse le mariage. Aprrenant l'arrivée prochaine d'un ambassadeur d'Espagne,
la reine se vêt en jeune et pimpant cavalier, et se trouve amenée à partager
pour une nuit la chambre du voyageur. Au moment de se dévêtir, elle ne peut
plus cacher à Don Antonio (John Gilbert) qu'elle est une femme. Et en fait,
elle va l'êtrepleinement avec lui pendant quelques jounées inoubliables. Toutefois,
le jeune homme ne découvrira la royale identité de sa maîtresse que lors de
la réception officielle. Pourront-ils s'enfuir ensemble? Magnus sait l'apaiser,
elle sait même convaincre son peuple d'abord désespéré qu'elle renonce au trône.
Mais Magnus a provoqué Don Antonia en duel. Et l'attente de la jeune femme,
tout près du port d'où ils doivent embarquer, se prolonge jusqu'à l'annonce
de la funeste nouvelle. Amante pour l'éternité, Christine accompagne le corps
de son amant sur le navire qui la conduira en Espagne. |
