St. Anthony's High School Friars

School Colors: Black and Old Gold

Circa 1972 to 1974

The helmet during this period consisted of a solid metallic Notre Dame gold shell and gray facemasks.

The away uniform consisted of a white short-sleeved jersey with black block numbers on the front and back and the word "FRIARS" in two-inch-high block letters above the front number and old gold pants with white-black-white side striping. I presume St. Anthony’s home jersey from that era had similar graphics, but in reverse colors.

1975 to 1976

St. Anthony’s helmet in the mid-1970s was black with a single yellow-gold one-inch stripe down the center from front to back and the initials S-A in golden yellow sans serif block letters arranged in a step down diagonal style.  The white short-sleeved away jersey had black block numbers on the front, back, and upper sleeves and solid black rib-knit cuff trimming. Black home jerseys had gold numbers and sleeve-end cuffs. Pants were golden yellow with narrow black-white-black side striping.

Late 1970s/Early 1980s

St. Anthony’s changed to a metallic old gold helmet with the word “Friars” written in black script letters on each side.  The black home jersey had golden yellow block numerals on the front, back, and upper sleeves and gold-white-gold-white-gold sleeve striping.  The pants were golden yellow with narrow black-white-black side striping.  The white away jersey had black numbers and black-gold-black-gold-black sleeve striping.

Circa 1984 to Late 1980s

St. Anthony’s High School moved from Smithtown to Huntington in 1984 and took over the former Holy Family High School building. With the move came some changes in the football uniforms.  While the jerseys and pants maintained the same basic graphic design used since 1977, the shade of yellow-gold was lightened somewhat, a white border was added to the gold home jersey numbers, and solid black helmets replaced the metallic gold shells.  By 1986, solid black pants replaced the gold pants.

1987

The Friars’ 1987 home football uniform had a look resembling the uniform the team would wear starting in 1993. The black home jerseys had UCLA shoulder loop striping in a gold-white-gold sequence, and white full block numbers and letters with separated gold outlining.  The black pants had a wide old gold stripe bordered by narrower white stripes down each outseam.

Circa 1989 to Circa 1992

By 1989, the Friars were once again wearing metallic light gold helmets, which now featured black-white-black striping down the middle from front to back.  The new black home jerseys had old gold crew neck collars, white full block numbers with separated old gold outlining, and the initials “SA” arranged diagonally on each sleeve in white full block letters with separated gold outlining.  These jerseys were usually worn with solid black pants, but could also be worn with Vegas gold pants that had black-white-black outseam striping.  The white road jerseys had black letters and numbers with separated Vegas gold outlining.

1993 to Present

The Friars’ current uniform style debuted in 1993.  The new black home jerseys had UCLA shoulder loop striping in a Vegas gold-white-Vegas gold sequence, and white full block numbers and letters with separated Vegas gold outlining.  These jerseys again featured the initials “SA” arranged diagonally on each sleeve. The word “FRIARS” was added to the shirtfront by 1996.  Solid black helmets with black facemasks were worn with these uniforms, as were solid black pants. Sometimes, a white players’ number has appeared on one side of the Friars’ black helmets. In 2001, a logo was added to the right side of the black helmet: the word “Friars” in black brush stroke script inside a white oval. In 2002, that logo was replaced by a white player’s number on each side.
