A quick comment:     Back to Review A-III     Back to Ultra Magnus Homepage

I thought the Spychanger Ultra Magnus in a way was very cool.  He's like the mini-version of the regular version.  I don't recall the exact date or where I got him other than it was in 2002 which I paid $VIII.  After 7 years later, I finally decided to the get the Ultra Magnus Universe version which was a redeco of the Spychanger.  That one I got it on Ebay for $VII on May, Iv, Mmxi.

R-2 RID Spychanger & Universe Ultra Magnus in Vehicle Mode:

magnusridbveh.jpg (71195 bytes)magnusridunvveh.jpg (74994 bytes)Unlike the Regular RID Ultra Magnus version, this miniature version is roughly 4 inch in height and has a simple transformation.  The trailer and cab is one piece, it cannot be separate out.  Also, the trailer has no special gimmick or functionality.  No car can be stored inside since it is basically solid and the rear of the trailer does not have an operable ramp.  On the other hands, you can put some World Smallest Transformer cars on top of his trailer.  Magnus comes with 5 wheels on each side, or 10 for both side.  Out of the 10 wheels, only 4 is operable while the other 6 wheels are false wheel.  Despites these limitations, this mini car carrier still looks hot as his big version.

The Spychanger Version was released first in 2002 and features the regular Ultra Magnus colors from the Robot In Disguise Line, light gray with blue.  At the front of the cab, the Autobot insignia color is a mixed of yellow and green.  In the regular version, this insignia was more of light gold chrome.  In 2004, this Ultra Magnus Spychanger mold was repainted and released under the banner Transformers Universe and was sold as Walmart Exclusive in a 2-pack robots format.  Therefore, this time he was packed with Ironhide Spychanger.  Universe Ultra Magnus colors are predominately black, blue, and some minor light gray and red.  Moreover, he has additional text at the rear of the car carrier or license plate that read WIDE LOAD.  I don't know whether this name has anything to do or do not with the G1 Season 4 character Wideload of the Throttlebots who transform into an orange and blue dump truck.  Why it wasn't lable as Ultra Magnus is beyond me.

R-3 RID Spychanger  & Universe Ultra Magnus in Robot Mode:

magnusridbrob.jpg (64861 bytes)magnusridunvrob1.jpg (68417 bytes)For those that complaint that Regular RID Ultra Magnus version transformation was too complex and confusing, well you will definitely love this miniature version.  This mini version can be transformed in less than 30 seconds.  The good part is that he is even more stable than his regular counterpart version.  As for for his robot mode, I'm not even sure which looks better, this mini version or his regular version.  Articulation only occurs at the head, shoulder, and the leg can do a full split.  Overall, the Spychanger mold looks awesome.  Too bad neither version come with any gun.

R-4 Universe Ultra Magnus w/ Spychanger Ironhide:

magnusridunvdet.jpg (84310 bytes)As mentioned earlier, the Universe Version was sold as a 2-pack or robots in one package.  In this case, Ultra Magnus' companion is a Spychanger Ironhide.  In both mode, Ironhide is just little bit more half the size of Ultra Magnus.  In addition, he also comes with a white gun while Ultra Magnus has none.

Special Notes: Here's "1" special note which I think you should know:

Due to the style of transformation, in time, Ultra Magnus will suffer the compression leg syndrome.  In other word, Ultra Magnus leg will shrink down and bury into his feet which will make him look shorter.  If you want to avoid the problem, then leave him in his alternated mode.

Overall Grade: [+B] - I think both the Spychanger and Universe Ultra Magnus mold are pretty darn cool for his size and colors.  Their transformation are simple and cool.
