VIGIL FOR GREG

The days wear on, but the wreckage and aftermath of the World Trade Center attack have yet to penetrate hope at the Hillcrest Fire Company.

Volunteers at the company's Route 45 firehouse maintained faith that colleague Greg Sikorsky of Wesley Hills was alive yesterday, six days after the New York City firefighter and ex-Marine entered the World Trade Center to help victims of a terrorist attack that killed thousands.

Sikorsky's fellow volunteers yesterday spoke of him in the present tense, calling him someone who knew his role at an emergency.

The father of one has been studying for a promotion test to be held next month, loves kids, has a special relationship with his Dalmatian, Dominic, and is so dedicated to firefighting that he joined the New York Fire Department after becoming a volunteer, they added.

"He is just a great guy to be around," said company trustee Tom Lorusso, with the department's gleaming trucks in the background and volunteers milling about. "Nobody ever complained about anything he did."

Dean Hankinson said Sikorsky had a soft spot for kids, volunteering as a Big Brother and playing an active role in the company's fire prevention program. But everyone knows that Sikorsky, a volunteer for about 16 years, is as tough as they come, he added.

"We all knew that when this happened, that he would be right there," Hankinson said. "He's been on our mind since the tragedy."

A memorial outside the fire company's Route 45 station includes several dozen candles, some that burned brightly under yesterday's afternoon sun, bouquets of flowers and a sign that read, "We miss you Greg. Come home soon. FDNY Squad 41."

A smaller note included the message, "God Bless you Greg; You are a true hero." There were also two photographs of Sikorsky.

The memorial was the idea of volunteer Rich Erzen, said company Chaplain Richard Silverberg.

Lorusso said the memorial, which has grown in size with candles left anonymously, is helping the local Fire Department through a tremendously difficult time.

"It makes us all feel like we're in this together," he said.

Sikorsky is one of 17 New York City firefighters from Rockland who are missing. An additional 24 from Orange County have not been heard from since Tuesday's attack.
Coast Guard Auxiliarist Gregory Sikorsky died during the collapse of the World Trade Center Sept 11 while helping people flee the buildings.

In addition to serving as a volunteer firefighter for 16 years with the Hillcrest Fire Department in New York, Sikorsky served in the Marine Corps Reserve and was a veteran of the Persian Gulf War.

Sikorsky joined the Auxiliary Jan. 24, 1995, and was a member of Division 10 in the 1st District Southern Region.

A memorial mass was held for him Oct. 20 at the Saint Boniface Roman Catholic Church in New York.

Sikorsky is survived by his wife Maria and their 3-year-old son, Steven.
