Volume 17 August/September 2004 - Scoreboard Theme - Email: TheHighlander

Mail Call - Letters to the Editor
We have received a lot of emails recently complimenting our staff, suggesting material, and inquiring about the future of The Highlander. Here are just a few. (Please let us know how we can make your newsletter better. Email us your questions, comments and suggestions.)

I enjoyed your recap of the 1921 Giants/Yankees World Series. Phil Douglas was my great uncle. The only time that I saw him was in CA 1936 when he visited our home for 2 days. Myself (12 years old) and my 4 brothers heard him recount his major league days. I, after studying, his career tend to think that he played a major role in the Giants winning the 1921 series with his 2 pitching wins. Agree?

Another event or first in that series was that it was the first world series to be broadcast over radio and the pitcher to throw the first ball all was none other than Phil Douglas. The Giants were the first to take the field in the series and PD was pitching and he had the honor of being the first.

There are, often, a few items on Ebay pertaining to PD. Last week, it was a book written (1978) by a Tom Clark of California. He did a good job but, apparently, did not know about his radio experience and it was not mentioned in the book. I have a copy.

If you think that the radio broadcast is worthy to mention, I would appreciate it very much whatever you can do. Thanks for reading this bit of baseball history. Best regards, Sam Stewart

Thanks for the email and the insight Sam. Yes, I agree. Your great uncle definitely had an impact on the '21 Fall Classic. How great that must have been to hear him recalling the glory days. I promise we'll research that first pitch / radio broadcast data and add it to the recap.

I just came across your essay relating Chess to Baseball. My son, Brett, age 13, is a state ranked chess player (his team placed first in the State of Virginia this year and he placed 14th as a 7th grader) - but as much as he loves chess, he loves baseball. He has been playing baseball for several years, and is one of the best pitchers in the city. Because of both, I think, he is always composed on the mound in tight situations, and composed at the board during tournament play.

His Letter to the Editor of the Richmond Times Dispatch was published in April this year when the paper did not devote any space to the State Chess Tournament in which over 500 players competed. He compared the lack of attention with the attention other sports receive and wrote how Chess was like Baseball, only less political. Because, of course, parents can't even be in the room during a chess tournament!

Anyway, I am sure he would love to play you online sometime. As a matter of fact, right now he is counseling younger kids at a chess camp for Richmond Chess (www.richmondchess.com). His baseball team is part of the Richmond Baseball Academy (www.vadevildogs.com). Thanks again for the great writing. Sincerely, Sara James

Sara, it sounds like your son is a man after my own heart. That's a rare and wonderful gift that he is able to excel in both Baseball and Chess. I'd love to play him sometime. (Tell him to look out though. I'm ranked among the top 1,000,000,000,000 in the country!)
