Behind The Bombers

Phil is publisher of the longest running New York Yankees fan site on the Internet http://www.behindthebombers.com and did the 2000 season update of The Yankee Encyclopedia 5th Edition published by Sports Publications LLC.

Well it is quiet now in Yankeeland so I guess the tabloids have to start picking at any little thing. The Daily News printed an interview a few weeks back where George Steinbrenner took shots at Jeter and Torre. Now everyone else is picking up on it. He knocked Joe's staff and Jeter's late nightlife. In an interview with the Daily News in December, Steinbrenner said that Jeter was staying out too later and spending too much time on non-baseball activities. George you own the team and you gave us a winner but you are barking up the wrong tree on this one. Joe Torre is probably the best manager the Yankees ever had. If you can't play for Joe you can't play for anyone. You can't argue with success, unless your name is George Steinbrenner. Sure Jeter does some late nights, but has he ever sat out a game because of it? Jeter plays hurt; he never complains about his injuries, you have to drag him out of the game.

Does Derek's late night add to his decline in numbers? IMHO, I say no! Both Derek and Joe understand the meaning of the Pinstripes, something it took Donnie Baseball until the day he returned to the Stadium to have his number retired to fully understand. Did DJ play hurt this season? Only he knows for sure and he won't tell. Plus the young shortstop always says the right thing go for extra bases even in response to all this hoopla. Derek may just be your next captain George, he may not be one of your Warriors but he can lead a team like Donnie Baseball, by example. The Boss may be just trying to light a fire under his team. Let's hope it doesn't backfire.

DID YOU KNOW? David Wells has to spend the night before he pitches with Don Zimmer?? That started during the trip to San Diego last season.

Hideki Matsui may be playing his next game in Japan sooner than he thinks. The biggest Japanese baseball star may open the 2004 season in Japan -- along with the entire New York Yankees. Should be interesting, and you thought you lost sleep during the west coast swings.

Yankees added another versatile arm to their staff on Monday, inking veteran right-hander Juan Acevedo to a minor league contract that contains an invitation to spring training. John Flaherty agreed to a minor-league deal with the Yankees that will pay him $750,000 if he makes the major-league roster. Flaherty will be invited to spring training and could compete for the backup job with Chris Widger.

It's Déjà vu all over again last week I told you that I felt Luis Sojo would be the manager of the Staten Island Yankees, well I was wrong, the new Staten Island Skipper will be none other than Stanky the Yankee. When the Staten Island Yankees raise their second NY-Penn League pennant in three seasons before their home opener June 20 against Williamsport, they will be led by former New York Yankee infielder the scrappy Andy Stankiewicz. He will be joined by newcomers Rick Tomlin (pitching coach) and Liam Frawley (trainer). Kevin Higgins will return to begin his fourth season as the team's hitting coach

That's it. Just IMHO.
Here is hoping that all your base hits go for extra bases.
Until next issue...
