Nothing and Everything at Once

Song 10

Endless hours of practicing had left her music sheets blank, her eyes dry from crying, and her fingers callassed and frustrated. She was tired and she was angry. She also felt incomplete. It had been a week since a band practice and not only was she feeling the withdrawls from her lack of medication but from her lack of music as well. It was time to reconcile with Julia.

The phone seemed to be the best way to do the deal, and arrange a meeting that way. But first, she had to call the other band members. Kalli would be the easiest to persuade so she was called first.

"Hello?"

"Hey, Kalli. Remember how we walked out on Julia last week?"

"Yeah. I think we should let it slide, sort of as a warning. We can discuss it with everyone over lunch."

"You know I don't care. Tell me where and I'll be there. The hard part is going to be Sarene."

"No kidding."

"No."

"That's it? No consideration? No explanation? Just no?"

"Yes."

"Sarene please. Why not?"

"No. The deal was she had to come to us. She had to be sorry. I am sick of being treated as a accessory for the little queen."

"What if I call her and get her to call you and she aplogizes?"

"Then, I'll come."

"Okay."

"Don't sound so hopeful Trish, we both know that Julia's too proud to do that."

"Hey, don't rain on my parade!"

Sarene laughed. "Good luck."

“Let me get this straight. You want me to apologize to Sarene? Why in the hell would I do that? I never did anything wrong. Yeah I got a bit too big headed. But the truth is that I need you guys, and you need me. We’re a team and we need to be together. I think this was just a test to see how this band thing will all work out in the future, and as far as I’m concerned Sarene failed it.”

“So what are you saying?”

“I’m saying, maybe we should look for a new bassist.”

“No.”

“Come on Trish. I’m smart. I know what I’m doing in this business.”

“But you don’t know what you’re doing when it comes to friendship.”

“This is show biz, it’s not about just friends anymore!”

“But you won’t have anything if you don’t have your friends anymore.”

“I’ll always have you.”

“Don’t be so sure.”

“What are you talking about? I’ve always been good to you.”

“Whatever, I don’t want to fight. I wanted to work this out, but it doesn’t look like it will. I won’t play without Sarene and she won’t play without your apology. Without us, you don’t get to sing. I’ll leave it up to you. Kalli and I are going to be a Chilli’s today at noon. If you’re cool with the deal then be there. But Sarene better be there too. If she’s not, then it’s over Julia.”

“Over?”

“Yeah.”

“God, when did you get so hard? Lighten up. I’m not worried. I mean yeah, you have no hope of fame without my voice, and I can make it without you, but still. Chill out.” Julia was met with a dial tone.

“Do you think they’ll show?” Kalli leaned across the table.

“I don’t know. I hope so though.”

“Hey guys!” Sarene walked to the table, a smile on her face.

“Where’s Julia?”

“How would I know? She called me, apologized and told me where to meet you. I’m sure she’ll be here though.”

“She apologized?”

“God, Trish, I’m not pig-headed all the time. Sometimes I know when to do the right thing.” Julia sat in the last available chair.

“So everything’s alright? Witheveryone?”

Sarene grinned, “We’re back together, baby!”

“Um…”

“Julz, what is it?”

“Are we still going to do that gig at Klub Dino’s, for all the little kids?”

“I don’t see why not.”

“I was just wondering, since all of this we haven’t had time to practice.”

“Well, let’s meet tomorrow, after school.”

“Okay.” Kalli and Sarene nodded.

“I need you guys. I’ve finally come to realize that. I need the work that you put in to us in order for me to be anything other than a nobody.”

Trish rolled her eyes. “That’s Julz for ya’.” She smiled.
