Nothing and Everything at Once

Song 11

“Hello?”

“Is Trish there?”

“This is Trish.”

“Hey! How are you? I told you I’d call.”

“Um, may I ask who this is?”

“Oh, yeah, sorry. This is Isaac.”

“Oh! Sorry, I didn’t recognize your voice. You sound so different over the phone.”

“Well so do you.”

Trish laughed a nervous laugh. “So how come you’re still in town?”

“Why? Are you in a hurry for me to leave?”

“Oh no, that’s not what I meant. I meant that you said you were leaving and you’re not gone yet…and oh my this isn’t sounding right at all.”

Isaac laughed. “Don’t worry, I know what you mean. We decided to stay and so some MTV stuff, some promo type things for the live album.”

Trish sighed, in relief. “Oh, is that sort of thing fun?”

“Yeah, but performing is a lot more fun.”

“Oh.”

“So, hey, what are you doing this Saturday?”

“Actually, the band I’m in is playing for this little kid’s club.”

“You’re in a band?”

“Yeah, didn’t I tell you? I thought I did.”

“Maybe you did, probably, I just forget things sometimes.”

“Uh oh, memory loss is catching up on you, quicker than normal.”

“Hey, don’t remind me.”

Trish laughed, the first real laugh she had in a long time. “Sorry.”

“No it’s okay. What’s the club called? Maybe my brother’s and I will come down and watch.”

“It’s called Klub Dino’s. Dino like the dinosaur dog from the Flinstones and remember that club is spelled with a ‘k’ and not a ‘c’.”

“Okay.”

“Well I need to be going. We have to practice.”

“Okay, I hope to see you there.”

“Me too.”

“You want to see yourself there? Isn’t that rather, odd?”

“You know what I mean.”

“Of course. Later.”

“See ya’.” Trish reluctantly put down the phone. She hadn’t felt so good in such a long time. Isaac was good for her, she could tell. The problem was she knew he wouldn’t always be around, and if she got too attached having him gone would hurt her more than anything.

“And I’ll see you, sometime I’ll see you again, when I’ve made it through my problems. I will be strong again. You’ll see, I don’t need you. Cut!”

“What’s wrong this time?”

“Oh no, it was me this time. I don’t think I was doing it good enough.”

“It wasn’t that bad, let’s just try to finish the song.”

“Okay, okay. From the top?”

“Yeah.”

“One, two, three, four.”

“You told me lies. You told me stories. You told fantasies. You brought me to glory. And then you left me. Hanging dry. I never lose like this. What makes you think you can try?”

The whole of our problems,
was centered around you.
The fact of my failure,
was something that you saw to.
But you can’t bring me down.
No you can’t bring me down.

“I’ve heard all your stories. They’re old to me now. I’m wise to your ways. I showed myself how. I don’t need you. I’m weak, but I’m still strong. I don’t mind being the loner. I’ve been playing it all along.”

The whole of our problems,
was centered around you.
The fact of my failure,
was something that you saw to.
But you can’t bring me down.
No you can’t bring me down.

“And I’ll see you. Sometimes I’ll see you again. When I’ve made it through my problems, I will be strong again. Don’t you see, I don’t need you. You can’t control me.”

You can’t bring me down!
The whole of our problems, “All of our problems.”
Were centered around you, “It’s all your fault.”
The fact of my failure, “Oh, my failure.”
Was something that you saw to, “It’s all your fault.”
But you can’t bring me down, “You won’t bring me down.”
No you can’t bring me down.

“You won’t bring me down.”

“That was good, right?” Trisha turned to Julia, expecting some sort of criticism.

“Yeah, that was good.”

“Are we good to go?”

“I think so.”

“So let’s go home, get some rest, and we’ll meet up on Thursday and Friday for our last rehearsals before the show, is that okay?”

“Yeah.” The other three band mates echoed.

“By the way, Hanson might be stopping in to watch. Don’t say anything about them being there. They don’t want attention drawn to them. I’m just saying that they have ties in the music industry. So if we impress them, then they could impress some executives, maybe. No promises, I’m just saying. So we gotta make this a good show.”

The girls nodded. “Don’t worry,” Kalli whispered into her mic. “We’ll show them, we maybe little girls, but we’ve got talent.”

A recording artist, whom no one had ever heard of in their life, once told them “You’ll never make it, you’re just little girls.” But here was their chance. Here could be a chance. They weren’t going to be little girls anymore.
