Caring for Wild Birds
You can feed the birds all year long. Fall is the best time to start feeding birds as the temperatures drop. You'll be seeing some migrating birds. Some will stop a few days to eat then proceed others may stay all winter. If you start feeding them you should do it the rest of the winter at least till spring. Gradually put out less food each day so they will look else where for more food. The rain, sleet, ice & snow make it hard for them to get enough to be strong to survive the cold weather. Check your feeder everyday and make sure it stays dry. Wipe it out, shake old on the ground before adding new. Ground birds pick up the scraps. Sometimes the rains come then it's all frozen up. The seed packs into a hard cake of ice & the birds can't eat it. Morning is the best time to put out bird feed. If you don't have a feeder just find a place under a tree where pine or bush branches protect it from covering with snow too quickly. Put about a cup full of mixed food, the birds will scratch & dig till it gets too deep.
