Ultimo Dragon is not "Ultimate Dragon" translated into Spanish as some would believe, but rather means "the Last Student of Bruce Lee." Ultimo began his career in Japan, where he won the J-Crown Championship. His career in the US began in WCW in 1996. He won the Cruiserweight Title from Dean Malenko, and then again almost exactly a year later from Eddie Guerrero. However, his career looked to be in peril after he suffered an arm injury. It was believed that the surgeon WCW assigned to give Ultimo his operation botched the procedure and cut a nerve in his arm. He left WCW after filing a lawsuit against them. He kept busy by training young wrestlers, such as Magnum Tokyo and the Dragon Kid, and managing two different promotions (Toryumon in Japan and IWRG in Mexico).
Ultimo Dragon finally returned to the US when he signed with WWE in 2003. He debuted in the summer, with a win over Shannon Moore. He was then entered in a tourney to crown a new US Champion, but lost in the first round to his old rival Eddie Guerrero. He also got a win over former Cruiserweight Champion Jamie Noble.
