After competing briefly in ECW as Miss Congeniality, Lita signed with the WWF at the end of 1999. She debuted alongside Essa Rios, and would imitate his high flying moves on his opponents when the ref's back was turned. She soon helped Rios win the Light Heavyweight Title. After Rios lost a match at Backlash 2000 to Eddie Guerrero, Essa and Lita had a falling out. The Hardy Boyz came to her rescue, and she started accompanying them to ringside. The trio was dubbed Team X-treme. She teamed with the Hardys to face off against T&A and their manager Trish Stratus at Fully Loaded, and Lita pinned Trish. Later in the summer, she won the Women's Title from Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley and held it until October, where she lost it to Ivory. She lost the return match to Ivory at Survivor Series, and continued to help the Hardys.

She started having problems with Dean Malenko, who was lusting after her despite being married. Matt Hardy came to her defense, and in the heat of the moment, kissed her. He quickly apologized, but Lita stopped him and kissed him back. They started a relationship, but Trish reasserted herself in the spring, seemingly trying to break them up. However, the superstars of WCW started invading and Trish and Lita formed an alliance against WCW's Stacy Keibler and Torrie Wilson. Trish and Lita beat them in a bra and panties match at Invasion. Shortly after Survivor Series 2001, the Hardys began to have problems after losing their tag titles to the Dudley Boyz. Lita was caught in the middle, and Matt broke up with her. He and Jeff had a match with Vengeance, with Lita in Jeff's corner. Jeff won the match, but over the next three weeks all three were assaulted by the Undertaker. Their injuries put them out of action, and they were able to patch things up.

They returned in February 2002, and the Hardys got a shot at the tag team titles at WrestleMania, but came up short. The roster split occurred shortly thereafter, but all three members of Team X-treme were drafted to Ric Flair's Raw brand. Paul Heyman, manager of Brock Lesnar, came onto her, but Lita turned him down. In response, he decided to sic Brock on the Hardys, and decimated both of them. During this, Lita injured her neck while appearing on Fox Network's Dark Angel, and was put out of action for about eighteen months.

During this time, she became a color commentator on Heat, but was then fired by Eric Bischoff after she refused his advances. She was hired back by co-GM Steve Austin and returned in September 2003, saving Trish Stratus from Gail Kim and Molly Holly.
