Welcome to our online Austria photo album. We
(Bob Parry, Ed James, Greg James and Bonnie Vargo)
took this biking tour between August 11 to 26, 1999.
We flew to Munich, Germany with our bikes packed in
boxes, put the bikes together in the Munich airport
and then took a series of five trains from Munich to
Krimml, Austria for the beginning of our big
adventure.
We traveled by bike from Krimml to Zell am See, to
St Johann im Pongau, to Salzburg, train to Braunau,
then biked to Passau (Germany), Aschbach, Linz,
Mauthausen, train to Melk, then biked to Krems and
Vienna. (Click map thumbnail to see trip map)
Ed and Bonnie then continued for another week
and biked into Hungary. We biked about 36 miles a day
sightseeing as we went. We stayed in youth hostels
and Pension's along the way. During the two week trip
we biked about 365 miles, trained about 600 miles and
flew about 10,000 miles.

After a ten-hour flight from JFK we arrive in the
Munich airport. We went through customs and passport
control and now we can start unpacking our bike boxes.
Yes!! Our bikes made it to Munich, Germany in good shape. We all used a heavy cardboard bike box and had to take our bikes apart and reassemble them in the airport. Because of a Delta Airlines screw-up we couldnot take our bikes on the plane from Cleveland to JFK in New York as the planes are too small. So we had to scurry around and find a way to have them shipped overnight to JFK and then check them in for the leg to Europe.
Our ordeal of getting our bikes to Germany is over
but now we start our first of five trains from Munich. On the way to Krimml, Austria we took five trains and had to lug our loaded bikes from train to train.

Each train had special accommodations for our bikes and other cyclists using the trains. We just had to lift the fully loaded bikes up into the car designated for bikes.
After 24 hours of travel we get to Krimml about 8:30 pm (2:30 am Cleveland time) and the hotel van picked us up including our bikes as it was pouring rain. PROSIT! (Cheers!) we are toasting our successful trip and eating our first meal since the day before.
Bob, Greg and Ed in front of the Pension in Krimml on our first "day" of our trip. There is a fine mist of rain and we plan to hike up to the Krimml falls that can be seen in the background.
Here we are at the start of the TaurenRadweg Bike Trail from Krimml to Salzburg. The start and sign were about 100 feet from the hotel we stayed at. Since we arrived there after dark we didn''t see the sign or trail until we woke the next morning.
We hiked up about 600' up Krimml Falls Europe's tallest waterfalls which consisted of many falls cascading over 1,200 feet to the town of Krimml in the background. This falls is the headwaters of the Salzach River that we will follow to Salzburg.
The TauernRadweg is the bike route from Krimml to Salzburg and covers about 100 miles from an elevation of 3,400 feet to 2,000 feet. The route is a mixture of narrow country roads, paved and gravel paths and a few rocky single-track trails.

Half way to our first stop we pause in the town square of Mittersill
One of many restaurants that the trail passes. While many of these buildings are hundreds of years old they are meticulously maintained and covered with flowers. Note the painted on "wood" trim around the windows. Bonnie had four panniers attached to her road-touring bike (with fenders). The rest of us had hybrid bikes and were the only ones in Austria without fenders.
